Hello! I’m Teacher Amanda

I graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia with my Bachelor’s Degree in Childhood Education with a concentration in Spanish and Inclusive Education. While working on my degree, I was a substitute teacher for grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. After graduating, I taught first grade in Arizona for two years. I then moved to North Carolina so my husband could open a business. I taught ESL classes to adults and then I taught first grade for two more years. Many of the students in my classes were English language learners. Once I became a mother, I decided I wanted to stay home with my children. I was blessed with the opportunity to teach with VIPKID. I was one of the first 10,000 teachers contracted! I taught with VIPKID for over 5 years. I have taught more than 7,300 classes. In addition, I have taught almost 1,000 students through Outschool. I am very excited to begin this new chapter of my life with private teaching. I believe my experience as a public classroom teacher, online teacher, and mother helps me make connections with my students and get them excited about learning English. I’m happy to communicate with parents and work as a team to best meet the needs of their learners.

My Teaching Style:

I like to make sure my students are engaged in their learning. I think it is important to give them many opportunities to speak and share their thoughts. I like to have fun and laugh in class. I use a mix of digital activities and traditional activities to keep my students interested in the class.

Fun Facts:

I have two children. My son is 6 years old and my daughter is 3 years old. They are being raised to be bilingual with English and Spanish.
I am bilingual. My native language is English, but I learned Spanish in high school and at University.
My husband is an English language learner. He is from Costa Rica and his native language is Spanish.
When I was younger my family hosted an exchange student from Panama. It was a life changing experience. As an adult, I have hosted exchange students from Germany, Thailand, and China.
I have two dogs. Scrappy, a small Chihuahua who is getting old and Tico, a young Golden Retriever puppy.

Class Options

Specialized Private Classes

These private 1-to-1 classes consist of some warm-up and free-talk, curriculum activities, and a summary of what to practice. With private classes, the lessons go at the pace that meets the students needs. We focus on exactly what the student can improve on, and no time is wasted reviewing things that the student already knows.

Small Group Classes

Group Classes (2-to-1 or 3-to-1) offer a unique and fun opportunity for students to play learning games together and add a competitive but fun edge to learning. This also helps some shy students feel more comfortable. They will take turns answering questions and reading. The teacher will take extra care to make sure that all students get a fair and equal amount of attention.

Conversation Practice

Conversation practice builds confidence in students. The teacher will ask lots of questions to keep the student talking, and be correcting grammar along the way. This is also a great option for students that resist textbook learning. The subjects will be tailored to the students interests, keeping them excited and engaged the whole time.

Reading Classes

It's very important for students to be confident in reading English if they will be pursuing higher education or international business. By reading out loud, the teacher is able to correct pronunciation and the student is able to better understand the usage of new words by seeing them in context. Reading out out loud builds confidents is students of all ages and levels.
